Ontario has a longstanding commitment to building its Innovation capacity. That's because Ontario has already seen the benefits of putting the right pieces into place to make the province a destination-of-choice for both international companies looking to develop their next breakthrough and international buyers searching for innovative technologies. As part of our ongoing series of publications and events focused on innovation, Ontario supported the development of Talent Strategies for Innovation: Japan, a new report from the Economist Intelligence Unit.
This report examines how Japanese companies face the challenge of recruiting, nurturing and retaining talented people to ensure their organisations remain innovative. Based on the results of a new survey of 50 senior executives from Japanese companies, the report suggests ways in which the pressures of competition and globalisation are forcing them to evolve talent management strategies.
Key findings include:
- Japanese companies place less emphasis on the importance of talent management in their organisation’s ability to innovate.
- Japanese companies are more likely to employ structured, long-term talent-management strategies.
- Japanese companies tend to value technical knowledge and learning ability over creativity and entrepreneurship.
- The pressures of globalisation and competition mean Japanese companies will have to look farther afield for talent.
