Ontarios Webseite für Deutschland

In the waves of European immigration that settled Ontario throughout the 19th and 20th century, German immigrants numbered among the largest. Owing to this, Ontario maintains a special relationship with Germany, in particular with Baden Württemberg, a German province with a similar economic structure (and fondness for asparagus) to that of Ontario. German businesses understand that Ontario is not only a key gateway to the Canadian market, but that it is an ideal hub for doing business throughout North America.

Trade and Commerce
  • Germany is Ontario's sixth-largest trading partner. In Ontario there are approximately 60 German companies, operating about 400 Ontario business establishments, and employing about 30,000 people.

  • Goods imported by Germany from Ontario in 2010 were valued at C$1.14 billion while goods exported by Germany to Ontario were valued at C$4.5 billion. See the Ontario-Germany Trade Fact Sheet.
Investments
  • In 2009 Ontario became the North American leader in green energy initiatives and incentives with the passing of the Green Energy Act. • In April 2010 H.C. Starck announced it would invest $16.4M to construct a new plant in Sarnia, Ontario, to process metal powder for use in cutting tools. [Source]

  • The economies of Ontario and the German state of Baden Württemberg have enjoyed a special relationship since the 1970s. In 2006 the relationship was renewed with a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at exchanges in the educational, environmental, social, energy, tourism and cultural sectors. There is also an agreement to continue expanding student exchanges between the two regions.

  • Bayer Health Care Canada, a subsidiary of the German company Bayer AG has had head offices in Ottawa, Ontario, for many decades. In 2010 Bayer Canada was named one of Canada's top 100 Employers.

  • BMW is the number one selling luxury brand of vehicle in Ontario.
Immigration and Travel
  • Close to one million Ontarians list their ethnic origin as German.

  • In 2006 there were 80,100  German-born immigrants living in Ontario, roughly 2.4% of Ontario's immigrant population, and 46% of Canada's German immigrant population.

  • The German emigration flow was quite high in Southern Ontario in the 19th century, with the highest population around a community hub called Berlin, renamed Kitchener in 1916.

  • In 1867, the year of Canadian Confederation, there was 18 German-language newspapers in Southern Ontario.
People and Talent
