Skilled, Educated and Reliable Workers

About 62 per cent of adults in Ontario have completed their post-secondary education – a rate higher than any OECD country, including the United States, which lags by 20 percentage points. Ontario workers have solid, practised skills you can rely on, with average on-the-job experience of more than 10 years for those in the manufacturing sector, and eight years for those in other industries. This also translates into lower training costs for you.

To ensure a high quality workforce, Ontario has invested in a robust post-secondary education and training infrastructure, which includes:

  • Universities - Ontario's 20 universities and university-related institutions offer a complete range of programs in the arts and sciences, as well as graduate and professional programs. Total graduates in 2008 at all levels numbered close to 100,000. Ontario universities attract students from all over the world. In 2010, more than 38,000 international students were registered at university here. Learn more by visiting the Council of Ontario Universities.

  • Colleges - Ontario’s 24 colleges prepare students for careers in business, applied arts, technology and health sciences. They also offer an extensive range of part-time and continuing education courses, apprenticeships and skills training programs. In 2009, close to 70,000 students graduated from Ontario colleges. • Apprenticeships - Ontario has apprenticeship programs for more than 150 skilled trades in four sectors: construction, industrial or manufacturing, motive power, and service. Programs range from two to five years and combine on-the-job training with study in a college of applied arts and technology.
