Agfa HealthCare
Chris Townend, Director of Marketing
"Waterloo gives us access to a large pool of innovative IT specialists. We're surrounded here by renowned institutions, including the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College. We've also received strong government support – the Ontario government is contributing close to $30 million for our expansion – proof of its confidence in our technology."
Context: Belgian-based Agfa HealthCare acquired Mitra Inc. of Waterloo in 2002 – and not only left the company where it was, it made the Waterloo facility its global centre of excellence for healthcare IT. To date Agfa has invested $200 million in its picture archive and communications software that allows medical professionals to store medical images, including X-rays, CT and MRI scans, and view and share them electronically anywhere.

And every day, OEMs from Acura to Volvo also turn to Autodata for custom-made solutions that help them streamline and automate their sales and marketing activities. When the company was bought by Los Angeles-based Internet Brands in 1999, it was left in London, Ontario where it began.
FDM4 International
John Cutsey, President
"North Bay is a great place to live and work, so it makes it easy for a company like ours to attract and retain good people. The cost of living is much lower than in larger ICT centres and the quality of life is much greater - our commute times are ten minutes or less. Our workers, who are recruited locally from Nippissing University and Canadore College, are well-educated, talented and dedicated. Our turnover rate is very low."
Context: For more than 30 years North Bay's FDM4 has been a leader in enterprise application software and solutions for the distribution and catalogue sectors. In 2008 the firm expanded into the U.S. to be closer to its west coast customers.
