Our industry is clustered in five centres - Ottawa, the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Niagara, Waterloo and London - and includes leaders in every sector.
Software and systems developers
HP, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Siemens and a long list of other world-leading companies have their Canadian headquarters in Ontario – and often their R&D facilities as well. Ontario is also where a number of homegrown high performers got their start, including Constellation Software, Corel, Cyberplex, Descartes Systems, MKS, OpenText and Platform Computing.
Wireless and telecommunications
The worldwide success of Waterloo-based RIM has reinforced Ontario's long-standing reputation for innovation and excellence in telecommunications. Ontario is home to more than half the leading companies in Canada's $16 billion wireless industry, including domestic leaders such as Rogers Communications and global players like Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Nokia.
Microelectronics
Toronto-based Celestica has grown to become one of the largest contract electronics manufacturers in the world with revenues of US$6 billion+ and 20 manufacturing and design facilities worldwide. It's the flagship for Ontario's innovative electronics manufacturing industry that includes companies such as Aastra Technologies, ATI (now part of AMD), Dalsa, Mitel Networks and Zarlink Semiconductor.
Digital media
Ontario has more than 950 interactive digital media firms that generate about $1 billion in revenue each year. Our digital games sector alone is growing at a rate of 30 per cent a year and includes premier games developers/publishers like Capcom, Tecmo Koei and Ubisoft, as well as brilliant domestic companies such as Artech Studios, Digital Extremes, Magmic Games and Silicon Knights.
Animation and special effects
Anchored by internationally recognized leaders such as Autodesk Canada, Nelvana and Side Effects, we have companies involved in everything from award-winning film and television productions to 3D-industrial design and training simulators.
E-Health
As a North American centre for both life sciences and ICT, we have the passion and the expertise needed to create high performance e-health solutions. That expertise is helping major international firms such as Agfa HealthCare and domestic providers like Nightingale Informatix and Diversinet succeed in a rapidly growing field.
Security software
World-leading Certicom, with clients that include the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), IBM, Continental Airlines, General Dynamics and Sony Ericsson, is the highest profile company in our cyber security sector. It also includes other world-leading Ontario companies like Third Brigade and international providers such as McAfee, Symantec and Cisco Systems.
Green IT
The momentum behind green IT is growing and companies in Ontario are making breakthroughs on every front, from Zerofootprint, which offers innovative software and services which help organizations measure and manage their environmental impact, to Fifth Light Technology which helps companies reduce their energy use through sophisticated light management systems.
