Ontario–based companies – and foreign-based firms operating in Ontario – are taking advantage of our large reserves of agricultural and forestry resources and significant quantities of waste organic materials to develop:
- bioenergy, including biofuels and biogas
- biochemicals
- biomaterials
We also have hundreds of talented scientists conducting bio-based products and processes research at 10+ publicly-funded research centres, including:
- Bioproducts Discovery & Development Centre: Plant biologists, chemists and engineers work with companies in the automotive, packaging and building materials sectors to commercialize biomaterials.
- Centre for Biocomposite and Biomaterial Processing: The centre conductsresearch on engineered wood and natural fibre composite materials used in building construction, automotive interior and exterior parts, architectural arts and many performance consumer and sports goods.
- Bioindustrial Innovation Centre: The centre takes sustainable feedstock, such as agricultural and forestry by-products and wastes, and turns them into energy and value-added chemicals for use in applications ranging from construction to automotive parts.
- Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources: Scientists at the institute develop technologies and processes for the production of chemicals and fuels from alternative resources, with an emphasis on green engineering and environmental sustainability.
