Ontario's Green Energy and Green Economy Act (GEA), passed in 2009, places a priority on establishing Ontario as the North American leader in producing and using clean and renewable sources of energy including wind, water, solar, biomass and biogas power. Key initiatives and provisions of the GEA, like the Feed-In Tariff Program (FIT Program), which offers long-term price guarantees for renewable electricity generators, have garnered international attention and enthusiastic responses by investors worldwide.

Although Ontario has been home to renewable energy development for decades, the adoption of the GEA has seen fast and significant growth in the province's renewable energy sector, including manufacturing, R&D, and major energy generation projects. These activities are taking place throughout the province.
