Beware of door-to-door sales people offering tempting deals on water heater rentals. Here’s what you need to know before you sign:

  • As soon as you open your door, ask for photo ID. Get the name of the person and the business. ID first, sales pitch second.

  • Read your agreement, especially the fine print. Do not feel pressured to sign on the spot. If the salesperson insists on immediate action, say no.
  • Know the terms of your agreement:
    • How long is it for?
    • Will the business automatically renew your contract without your consent?
    • If you want to get out of your agreement, what will it cost?
  • You have the right to cancel your door-to-door water heater agreement within 10 days of receiving your written copy.
  • In some cases, you may have up to a year to get out of the contract if the agreement
    • Fails to disclose key information, like all costs.
    • Or fails to tell you about your rights.
