> Consumer Services spokesperson speaking inside a car dealership. Narrates over various images of an auto shop, cars and car repairs being conducted.

“Choosing a reliable shop to service or repair your car is often a tough task. Unnecessary repairs and overpriced jobs are some of the most common ways in which consumers can get scammed.

Follow these tips to help you find a trustworthy business. Ask your friends and co-workers for recommendations, word of mouth is often the best way to find a reputable service shop. When you go into a shop, see if the mechanic’s license is visible and if not ask questions. Look for signs that list how their labour costs are calculated whether they charge for estimates, whether commissions are paid to mechanics and that they’ll return replaced parts to you if you want them. This is required by law. Get a written estimate before repairs begin. The shop is required to offer a written estimate unless you decline and instead authorize a maximum amount you’re willing to pay.
