Ellen Roseman, Consumer Columnist, Toronto Star
-> A consumer expert offers her online shopping tips.

“If you are going to be shopping online, always deal with a merchant that you know probably someone that has a bricks and mortar stores so that you can go there and complain if you have a problem.  And get them to remedy it in person, which can make you feel a lot more effective.  I would say get a special credit card that you only use for online.  Don’t use your regular credit card, so that if you do have a problem you can cancel it.  And you can control online shopping much better with a credit card that is devoted just to online shopping.  And again be really specific upfront about how do I cancel, when do I cancel, is it easy to cancel and if you have any problems go to the Ministry of Consumer Services and they maybe able to help you out.”
