What is the role of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing as well the role of my municipality with respect to the building industry?

The Building and Development Branch of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing administers the Building Code Act, 1992, and its regulations, which establishes construction standards for new buildings, renovation, and when a building changes from one use to another, e.g., commercial to residential.

The Building and Development Branch provides enforcement officials and other building code users with advice and information so that they can apply Building Code requirements more consistently. For more information about the Building Code Act, 1992, and its regulations, please visit the Building Code website.

Your municipality is responsible for enforcing the Building Code in your own jurisdiction. Tarion does not conduct inspections to determine compliance to the Building Code. If you have concerns about whether your home meets construction standards, you should contact your municipality for further assistance. To access your municipality’s home page, you may refer to the following list of Ontario municipalities maintained by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.
