The Consumer Protection Branch is here to help you understand Ontario’s consumer protection legislation and direct you to the right information.

We mediate disputes between consumers and businesses, inspect businesses to help them comply with consumer law, and investigate or prosecute when it appears that consumer laws have been violated.

Dispute Resolution

The Consumer Protection Branch mediates disputes between consumers and businesses where appropriate.

If you have a dispute, first try to resolve the problem with the business. Be sure to visit Your Consumer Protection Toolbox to find out what you need to do before the Consumer Protection Branch can take action. You’ll find information on how to write a complaint letter and have access to sample letters and find out how to file a formal complaint with our office.

Note: Some marketplace sectors are regulated under specific consumer protection and safety legislation other than the Consumer Protection Act, including new home purchases, motor vehicles and real estate. See Your Consumer Protection Toolbox for links to those regulatory bodies.

Inspection, Investigation and Enforcement

We also have inspectors who visit businesses to help them comply with consumer law in sectors such as cemeteries, motor vehicle repairs, health and fitness clubs, collection agencies and payday loan companies.

If it appears that consumer laws have been violated, we have discretion to investigate. Violators may be prosecuted.  We can also pursue restitution for consumers in court.
