Consumer Alert: Snow Removal Scams

Complaints and news reports about snow removal scams are on the rise. Typically, the scam artist takes payment for the whole season, then never comes back. Don’t fall for a snow job.

If you’re thinking about a snow removal contract:

  • Check with your municipality to see if snow removal operators are required to have a licence. If so, ask to see the operator’s licence.
  • Always check the reputation of snow removal suppliers with family, friends, the Better Business Bureau, or our Consumer Beware List.

Tips to avoid being scammed

  • Make sure you have a written agreement.
  • Don’t pay for the whole season (unless you have a relationship with an established operator).
  • Restrict any deposit for work to no more than 10 per cent.
