The Consumer Protection Branch investigates businesses based on complaints about their
practices.
In 2011, we laid 823 charges under the Consumer Protection Act, 2002 and other Acts
enforced by the Ministry and our efforts resulted in:
Individuals convicted under the Consumer Protection Act, 2002 may receive a maximum
sentence of two years less a day in jail or fines up to $50,000. Corporations convicted
under the Act may receive fines up to $250,000.
Anyone with information about unfair business practices or other activities in
contraventions of consumer protection laws in Ontario should contact us.
